Safe Space For Activities, Tulsa Organization Opens Community Center

A new community center near 36th Street North and Peoria is now open with the goal of bringing Tulsans together. Crossover Community Impact just held a ribbon cutting to signify the grand opening of the facility.

Leaders from the organization said it will be a safe space for people of all ages to come and make positive changes in their lives.

"Today is an extremely exciting day for our community, for the north Tulsa Community and also for the Crossover family," Janet Hendricks, Crossover Community Impact's director of operations said.

Hendricks hopes that this facility will allow Tulsans to better themselves through education, recreation and physical health.

"People will be able to come in and dream; come in and feel supported and really get the support that they need to enhance the quality of their life," Hendricks said.

The people who live in north Tulsa, like Lakeesha Peeples, say this space can make a positive difference for everybody, including our children.

"It is greatly needed for our young men, to catch them before society sometimes catches them, before they get into trouble. Positive reinforcement, positive direction, mentorship, and now we have the young ladies as well that are being mentored," Peeples said.

This is a facility focused on community, and it was a community-wide effort from the start, with people from Tulsa County to the Cherokee Nation. It was everyone working together to get this vision to the finish line.

"Cherokee Nation, we did have ARPA funds and different funds. So I worked with Stan Sallee, the county commissioner and Senator Matthews and we talked about growing this and helping them get the capital because they sort of hit a stalemate," Joe Deere, Cherokee Nation Tribal Council for District 13 said.

Tulsa County Commission Stan Sallee hopes that this facility will all north Tulsa to continue to grow.

"You want to have families want to stay here and educate them and to have healthcare education as well, and it’s really a benefit to continue to promote north Tulsa," Sallee said.

It's a facility that calls North Tulsa home, but it's open to everyone. Memberships for the facility are available for $15 per month.
