New Year’s Day is ranked nationally as being one of the deadliest days on the road.
According to AAA, the New Year’s holiday is known as the deadliest day for alcohol-related traffic fatalities.
Rylie Fletcher with AAA Oklahoma says with many people celebrating the New Year and then getting behind the wheel after a night of drinking, January 1 is a dangerous day on the roads. AAA Oklahoma always suggests you find a designated driver, never drive in a car with someone who's been drinking, and don't be afraid to take the keys from someone who has been drinking.
“We are closing in 2023 and entering into a new year and a new era for many people. However, that celebration does get taken too far and get cut short by bad decisions,” Fletcher said.
If you encounter an impaired driver on the road, AAA suggests keeping a safe distance and ask a passenger to call 911 or pull over to a safe location to make the call yourself.
