A Tulsa man who runs a security company says he and his employees were working the Kansas City Chiefs’ victory parade when people started shooting, killing one person and injuring more than 20 others.
Mike Lowry said his team prepares for these situations and their training quickly kicked in when the shooting started.
Lowry says his security teams were scattered throughout the parade route. Everything seemed normal until shots were fired.
“A lot of people thought it was fireworks from what we understood,” said Lowry. “You had some people walking calmly, some people rushing.”
He said it was chaotic when thousands of people started running in every direction to get away from the gunfire.
“You have no idea where the gunman’s at,” said Lowry.
Lowry’s training kicked in. He and his team started getting people to safety by letting them into buildings.
They also helped law enforcement by setting up roadblocks and clearing the way for ambulances. In the middle of all the chaos, Lowry’s team helped reunite four kids with their families.
“That’s the worst thing of all,” he said. “Just seeing the fear in the kids eyes, that an event like that turned tragic for them.”
Lowry said this is a scary reminder of how important it is for everyone to be aware of their surroundings. He says everyone should have a plan that includes an escape route when in situations with huge crowds.
Signal Security offers free active shooter training to any business or organization that is interested.
