Class pets are popular--turtles, hamsters, even frogs.
But some unlikely animals have found their forever home in a Broken Arrow Middle School after they were abandoned at the Tulsa Humane Society.
Every morning when Emily Stephens comes to work, she checks on the two new pets that have taken over her office in the Oliver Middle School Library, Honey and Matilda.
Emily adopted the two rats from the Tulsa Humane Society last week.
"So, I started my morning. It was about 7:30, and I get a text from my sister of rats in a box basically. From there, it was a fast-moving process," said Emily.
Her sister discovered the rats as she was walking into work at the Humane Society.
"Before we were even in the door, I sent a photo to my sister because she had a rat growing up, and I think it was something along the lines of ‘You will not believe what is in this tub,’ and it now spiraled to the two rats now living behind me in her office her at the Oliver Middle School," Rachel Ward said.
"At 7:31 I said I want them," Emily said.
On the same day they were found, Honey and Matilda moved into their new home.
Emily says the students have enjoyed the new residents of the library.
"They come in here and say, ‘I hear you have rats; can I see them?’” she said. “Surprisingly, it's been positive because rats don't have a great reputation."
Despite the bad reputation, all six rats that were abandoned were adopted.
"In this case, everything worked out in a good way, but that is not always the case,” Rachel said. “With something like rodents, we were not prepared necessarily to take them on and immediately get them settled."
A happy ending for Honey and Matilda.
