Dozens Of New Burials And Gunshot Victim Found In Search For Mass Graves In Oaklawn Cemetery

Researchers at Oaklawn Cemetery announced on Friday they've found 40 new grave sites possibly connected to the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre.

They've also found a gunshot victim in three sets of remains that were exhumed.

"So those three individuals are buried in adult-sized wooden caskets, so they have been removed from the ground and taken into our forensic facility on site," said Kary Stackelbeck.

Kary Stackelbeck is the State Archeologist over the Oaklawn dig site.

These new findings come just 3 weeks after researchers announced they've identified the first Massacre victim found at the dig site. C.L Daniel is connected to Burial 3 which is in the area identified as the "Original 18".

"So, there are two of our individuals that we've exhumed are to the west of Mr. Daniel, and one individual is to the south of where Mr. Daniel was recovered," said Stacklebeck. "We discovered a bullet that was in place, and we have thoroughly documented it. That confirms our third gunshot wound victim that we have uncovered as part of our excavations in this part of the cemetery."

More excavations are expected to continue next week.
