News On 6 looks back on 75 years of covering Oklahoma, including one Tulsa tradition coming back this year — the Great Raft Race.
The Great Raft Race was a Tulsa staple for years starting in the 70s.
It's one of the more unique and fun traditions News On 6 has covered over the past 75 years.
The raft race began in 1973 and became Oklahoma's largest single-day event ever until it stopped in 1991.
While some were going for the trophy, others were just there to have a good time.
Interviewer: “Are you competing or just having fun?”
Racer: “I think we're just having fun.”
Interviewer: “Is that true, is everybody having fun?”
Now, the tradition is making a comeback for the “Big Dam Party” celebrating Zink Lake.
The Great Raft Race includes long river runs, whitewater exhibition, and corporate challenges.
It starts on Monday at 8 a.m.
