The Fort Gibson Fire and Police Departments put on a water day for elementary kids.
It's a fun way for them to get to know each other in a comfortable setting rather than when there's an emergency.
It's the calm before the storm — as Fort Gibson Firefighters fill water balloons and inflate slip n' slides, hundreds of elementary school kids like Addy Philpott and William Henson patiently wait for the fun to start.
“I hope to have the best water day ever,” Addy said.
“I am looking forward to the waterslides over there. The one with the palm trees and one over there with a ladder you have to climb up. I don't know how long I am going to have to wait, but I know I am getting on those,” said William.
With that call, a stampede of kids eager to go down the waterslide, splash around, and even take their shot at hitting police officers and firefighters like Chris Brassfield with balloons.
“It's one day a year we get to come out and play,” Brassfield said.
The water day started three years ago as a way for the kids to get to know first responders before they might meet them in an emergency.
“Sometimes when we come around, it can be a scary event and something could be happening at their house. Here, we are just here to have fun and watch the kids laugh. it makes us laugh too,” he said.
Addy says she enjoys becoming friends with the firefighters.
“They always spray us,” she said.
As the water balloons ran out and the towels were passed out, the kids and the firefighters were already counting down to next year's water day.
“We will keep coming back as long as they want us,” said Brassfield.
