Abi Bermudez founded the first East Tulsa Senior Community Event, which is a special event for local seniors at the YMCA on 11th Street on Sept. 28.
Bermudez, whose organization NaviLexis Solutions focuses on helping seniors navigate retirement and Medicare, was inspired to create this event after a nonprofit shared survey results indicating that many seniors in the area felt like nothing was available for them.
She initially considered a simple bingo night with root beer floats, but she quickly expanded her vision into a full festival to celebrate and engage the senior community.
The event promises something for everyone. Attendees can look forward to:
The first 200 seniors to arrive will receive boxes of groceries, each containing 26 meals.
In addition to entertainment, 12 local nonprofits will be on hand to provide valuable resources. Organizations like the Tulsa Health Department and the Alzheimer's Association will share information on free community services.
There will also be representatives from groups like TIDC, which assists individuals with citizenship applications, highlighting the range of support available to attendees.
Bermudez emphasizes the event’s goal of making seniors feel seen and celebrated. “I want them to feel this day that they're being celebrated, that they are seen, and they're gonna have a great time,” she explains.
For those interested in attending, registration is available through Eventbrite, but the event operates on a first-come, first-served basis.
Guests can enjoy the festivities regardless of whether they choose to pick up a grocery box.
The event will be on Saturday, Sept. 28, from noon to 4 p.m.
