Two people are in the hospital after police say their father shot them during a family fight.

Police say the father said he was shooting at his stepson in self defense, but ended up hitting his daughter in the chest, too.

Officers questioned the father and released him.

Neighbors say they see police in the neighborhood near Pine and North Boston a lot.

Shamika Figures lives nearby and says she was sleeping when she woke up to the sound of a gunshot Tuesday afternoon.  She said she wasn’t surprised to hear it, but she didn’t realize the shooting was so close to her home.

“I just came around here because I thought it was down the street from me, but it was right behind me,” she said.

Police say they believe the father and stepson were fighting and the daughter stepped in to break up the fight just as the father shot.  The daughter was shot in the chest and the stepson was hit in the leg, police say.

According to police, after speaking with everyone involved, they believe the father may have fired in self defense.

“When you start looking at family issues, and you start looking at situations where the person who was shot is so much larger than the shooter, you sometimes find yourself in a situation where the use of a firearm might be the only recourse to defend yourself,” said Sergeant Marcus Harper.

Another neighbor says the stepson told him he was released from jail and stopped by his home about an hour before the shooting.

“I just seen the police come down the street and I was like, ‘What the hell is going on?’ and then I seen him getting in the ambulance, and I was like, ‘Damn, he just left here,’” said neighbor Lamuel Hunter.

Figures says she’s lived in the neighborhood for three years and there’s a lot of police activity and she just wants to violence to stop.

“We just need to pray for the families and, as for gun violence, we need to stop it, seriously,” said Shamika Figures.  “I know we have them in our homes to protect each other, but families, we don’t need that.”

The daughter and stepson were transported to the hospital in critical condition, but they are said to be stable.
