Bristow School Board Adopts Four-Day Week

The Bristow school district became the latest district in the state to move to a four-day week in order to save money.

The board voted Monday night to adopt a four-day week, beginning in the fall.

"Absolutely because of the financial crisis," said Superintendent Curtis Shelton.

Shelton said the district did a survey of the community and received 1,400 responses. He said 89 percent of the people who took the survey chose moving to a four-day week as the top option to deal with state funding cuts.

Shelton said the district expects to save about $400,000 over the next school year with the shorter weeks, spending less on utilities, transportation and food service. 

Shelton believes people in the community chose the new schedule because they believe it would be less painful than having to lay off employees or drastically increase class sizes.
