Retired Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn is now a member of the News On 6 team. He'll provide opinions and commentary on the presidential race and other issues.
Tuesday, Coburn shared his strong views on Donald Trump.
"I don't think he has the personal characteristics to represent this country in a legitimate way. You know, the brashness will put off people in terms of dealing with foreign people. Number two, the way he talks to people and about people lacks a certain amount of compassion. He knows how to draw people's fears, he's done a good job of that, but so have a lot of other bad leaders, done the same thing to get elected. No, I'm not a Trump fan --- that doesn't mean that he's not a legitimate candidate, it doesn't mean he's not a smart man...he is...I just can't see us having him as our president."
Terrorism will be a main topic at Tuesday's Republican debate in Las Vegas as a new poll shows it’s now the top concern of Americans.
Coburn believes President Obama's reluctance to use the term "Radical Islam" is a big reason behind American's heightened fears of terror.
"Radical Islam is our enemy, Islam's not our enemy, but radical Islam, and to not differentiate between the two means you can't identify it and that's what we've done. We're not identifying those people who actually want to hurt us and we need to. It's just like the guy at Fort Hood, Texas. There's no question that was radical Islam. There's no question about it, and to not call it a terrorist attack means you're denying the truth which means you delay the time in which you can make a decision about actually solving the problem."
Former Senator Coburn will provide commentary for News On 6 throughout the election season.
