Three local fire departments teamed up with the Red Cross on Saturday to make sure area homes were equipped with smoke detectors. The Catoosa Fire Department - along with Oak Grove and Rolling Hills Fire Departments - worked with volunteers in Catoosa.
Their goal is to reduce the number of fire-related fatalities the area. They visited around 280 homes, installed free smoke detectors and educated families on fire preparedness.
"It's a simple, inexpensive device and it doesn't cost anything for us to do that today, and it could save somebody's life," Catoosa Fire Chief Dennus Benton said.
"You know you can replace your house; you can replace your car; you can replace your items, but you can't replace somebody's life."
The Red Cross and the fire departments say they'll install free smoke detectors in any home that may need them.
