A McIntosh County man is in jail accused of felony animal cruelty.
According to a news release from the McIntosh County Sheriff's Office, a deputy went to a home in the River Oaks community southeast of Eufaula on Sunday, January 18, 2015 to investigate a report of an injured dog.
Deputy Kevin Branscum saw a dog behind the house which he said had major injuries to its head and neck and was covered in blood.
According to the deputy, Jordan Smith, 23, the man who lives in the home, told him he had tried to kill the dog by stabbing it in the neck with a knife. When that failed, he hit the dog on the head with a hammer approximately 10 times before leaving it to die, according to the deputy.
The deputy contacted an animal rescue group which took the dog to a veterinary clinic. The clinic euthanized the dog due to the severity of its injuries. The clinic told the deputy the dog had multiple major injuries including broken bones in its face and head.
The deputy arrested Smith. He's being held in the McIntosh County jail on a bond of $50,000. His initial appearance is scheduled for January 21, 2015.
