Northbound traffic on Highway 169 at 41st Street was diverted as authorities investigated a collision involving a pedestrian.

Police say a man running across the highway was struck by a northbound car early Sunday. The man was in critical condition when transported to the hospital but has since died of his injuries, according to Officer Leland Ashley, Tulsa Police.

"It appears this individual - for whatever reason - darted across traffic and was struck," he said. "I don't have a name or an age at this time, but it was a male subject."

Ashley said there was no fault on the part of the driver. He was not injured.

Police believe the man was just trying to cross the highway when he was hit at about 5:30 a.m. Ashley stressed how dangerous it is to cross a highway on foot, especially in the dark.

"It's really hard to judge traffic, the speed of traffic, on a highway such as this," he said. "Your perception might be, 'well, I can make it,' but with vehicles traveling anywhere from 60, 70 miles per hour, you're just not going to make it."

The man's identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
