Sand Springs Man Shoots Dogs, Claims He 'Did What He Had To Do'

Two dogs in Sand Springs were shot with a crossbow. The dogs' owner is upset, but the shooter said he did what he had to.

It's a convoluted case of emotions that blew up on social media; one thing that can't be argued is that one dog is dead, and another is in critical condition.

"The dogs were in there killing my chickens, I had no choice,” the homeowner said.

The man responsible for killing one dog and critically injuring another didn't want his name used, but he did want to set the record straight.

"I lost five head of chicken, six of ‘em are injured. I don't know if they's going to die or not, and, you know, I love my chickens just as much as they love their dogs but if they would have been in the same situation I don't think they'd have done anything different,” he said.

Katelyn Davis whose dog Milo was killed, said it didn't have to be done.

“He didn't apologize or anything, he just kept trying to turn it all around like ‘you need to control your dogs' and I'm like ‘you had no right to kill them,' there's always another way,” Davis said.

It all started when Davis said her dogs didn't show up for breakfast.

"I came outside to feed and water them and found that they were gone, that's the first thing I did was post on Facebook, Instagram. Everybody around here knows them,” she said.

Then, after a day of looking, Davis said she got a call that they were at a home just a few streets away, safe, but when she got there it was clear that they were not.

"We pulled up and people said they heard horrible screaming from the dogs, like yelping. Just because they were in his yard for like 30 seconds he just went out there and freaked out on them,” Davis said.

The incident spurred outrage on social media sites, but the man said he did what he had to.

"It's not my fault, it's not the dogs fault, it's the owners fault. The owner should have been taking care of their animals,” he said.

According to the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office, no charges are being filed. Investigators said there is no case against the man and that he was in the right to defend his property.

As for the dog that lived, he remains is critical condition, but the arrow has been removed.
