The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says a Sand Springs man died in a crash on Highway 412 on the west side of the bridge over Keystone Lake Thursday morning.

OHP said the driver, William Altebaumer, 31, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Cadillac SUV headed east ran off the highway, busted through the guardrail over the lake and rolled several times as it crashed down the rocky embankment and came to rest just offshore at about 6:30 a.m.

Temperatures were in the 20s and freezing fog was thick over the lake. Troopers said they believe weather conditions were a factor in the crash.

In their report, troopers stated Altebaumer was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

Two more crashes happened on that stretch of highway at about the same time, but neither caused serious injuries.

One of the other crashes involved a pregnant woman who had three children in the car. Troopers said her car rolled over and almost hit a fire truck that was working the fatality crash.

The third crash happened in the westbound lanes. The driver was not injured after his car hit a guardrail, investigators said.

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation said eastbound traffic on Highway 412 was stopped at the Bears Glen exit for a short time. One lane was opened later and traffic was moving slowly across the bridge for a couple of hours.

The fatality crash took place near the spot where a semi plunged down the riprap in January and spilled into the water 5,000 gallons of crude oil it was transporting. The OHP said the truck driver clipped the back of a car that was traveling under the speed limit after getting a flat. Troopers said the driver of the small car smelled of alcohol. No one was seriously hurt in that incident.
