Winter Storm Warning Raining On Parades Across Green Country

The weather has changed plans for many parades and football games this week. But, so far, the Jimmy Buffet concert at the BOK center is still on for Thursday night.

A big football game and some parades planned Thursday have been postponed. Wednesday, several cities decided even Saturday wouldn't work, because it's going to be too cold.

There was supposed to be a parade down Broadway this Saturday in Coweta, but it's been pushed back a week. There hasn't been a single complaint.

"Everybody's main concern at the time was the cold temperatures. They didn't want the little kids or older folks, especially our grand marshal, the oldest living World War II vet in Coweta, out in that weather," said Jennifer Humphries, of the Coweta Chamber of Commerce.

Christmas parades, especially, are vulnerable to the weather, and organizers have to consider the comfort of the people in the parade and whether anyone will show up to watch.

Sand Springs canceled their parade planned for Friday.

"Not so much the ice or snow, the wind chill factor for people standing or being outside for a long time was going to be an issue," said Debbie Nobles, of the Sand Springs Chamber.

Both Wagoner and Vinita have moved their parades to Thursday, December 12. Glenpool, Muskogee, Coweta, Chouteau and Okmulgee set theirs for Saturday, December 14.

The towns of Sand Springs, Pryor and Bristow all canceled for the year.

The weather is also forcing a change for the 6A state football championship. Jenks and Union were supposed to play Thursday in Stillwater, but with the return trip likely to be hazardous, the game was delayed.

"It's something I understand, but I think the whole team was ready to play, ready to go play," said Jenks player Steven Parker.

The Christmas parade at Tulsa Hills Shopping Center, planned for Saturday, is still on, and organizers say it won't be canceled unless the roads are still slick from the sleet and snow that's in the forecast.

The parades still planned this weekend are subject to change. Some organizers are waiting until Thursday to make the call. Some say they'll wait until Friday for proof that there's going to be snow and ice.
