Police say a badly decomposed body was discovered Wednesday afternoon in a vacant lot near McLain High School.

Tulsa Police said the body was found around 2 p.m., by a crew of contractors getting ready to mow the vacant lot near the school in the 4900 block of North Peoria.

Officer Leland Ashley said they believe the body to be that of an adult male, but they can't determine the exact age or race. Police don't believe the death has any connection to the school.

They say, at no point was McLain put on lock down Wednesday afternoon.

Though they haven't yet determined when the man died, police say they think the body has been there in the lot for more than a week. They say some customers at the Shell gas station next door told them they started smelling a foul odor in the area about seven to 10 days ago.

Police say the medical examiner will investigate to determine the cause of death.
