Police arrested a Tulsa man in the attempted rape of a 20-year-old woman along a Sand Springs jogging trail last weekend.

The attack happened last Sunday in River City Park. Police say the man passed her on a black bicycle. As she passed under a bridge, police say he pulled a gun on the woman and forced her to walk to a wooded area, where he demanded she perform sexual acts. He also produced a knife.

The woman fought back, cutting her hand in the process, and the man ran off. The woman said she thought she may have stabbed the man in the leg in the struggle.

Police announced in a news conference they arrested 49-year-old Steven Ray Bowes around 3 p.m. Friday, in connection with the attack.

He is being transferred to the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office for holding and will be booked into jail on multiple counts, including kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, first-degree robbery and attempted forcible sodomy.

He was also arrested on an outstanding warrant for an occupied dwelling unfit for habitation. Later, when he was interviewed about the attempted rape, Bowes confessed to the attack, according to the arrest report.

Police say they found several knives, a bicycle, a blue baseball cap, cargo shorts with a red substance on them and a toy gun when they searched Bowes' home.

Court records show Bowes was charged with domestic assault and battery last year. That charge was dismissed.

Sand Springs Police said they received multiple tips in the case and held the press conference to announce the arrest a quickly as possible, because they knew many residents were on edge.
