A partnership between the Tulsa Police Department and the Oklahoma Technical College has led to five free battering rams and some extra money in the city's pocket.

Detective J.B. Bennett was searching for affordable battering rams when the school said they could make them for free.

Local fabrication shops donated metal scraps and the students designed and welded the equipment. Battering rams are essential to TPD, so quality was key.

"They're incredibly vital. If you can't get into a door, evidence can be destroyed, evidence can be disposed of, evidence can be hidden. At times, like for the SWAT team, it could be a life or death thing," Bennett said.

Members of the SWAT team received the battering rams Thursday and were impressed with the students' work.
