Oral Roberts center Damen Bell-Holter has been named the Southland Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week.
Last week, Bell-Holter scored 27 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in a 64-52 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and poured in 13 points to go with six rebounds and four blocks in a 65-61 overtime win at Sam Houston State. The senior from Hydaburg, Alaska (Ketchikan H.S.), averaged 20.0 points and 9.5 rebounds in the two road games that kept the Golden Eagles within one game of league-leading Stephen F. Austin. Bell-Holter made 8 of 9 shots from the floor and connected on 11 of 12 free throws against the Islanders. He finished the week shooting better than 73 percent from the field (11 of 15) and 90 percent from the free throw line (18 of 20). ORU is 10-8 overall and 5-1 in the Southland.
Honorable mention this week goes to Nicholls State senior guard Fred Hunter, Stephen F. Austin senior forward Taylor Smith, Northwestern State senior guard Shamir Davis and McNeese State sophomore forward Craig McFerrin. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
Each school's sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his own player.
