Tuesday Morning Update

Election Day weather across Oklahoma will be good with morning lows in the 30s and 40s followed by afternoon highs in the mid to upper 60s.  A few clouds will slide near Northeastern OK but sunshine will be the rule for most of the day.  Light southwest winds will be common but later this afternoon a weak surface boundary may approach northern OK and southern Kansas allowing for a winds shifting to the north.  A warming trend is expected for the rest of the week before storms arrive Sunday. 

Our main upper air pattern is expected to undergo a change by late this week into the weekend.  The northwest flow aloft will be replaced by a southwesterly flow allowing a powerful upper level system to move across the middle part of the country this weekend.  A surface cold front will move across the state from west to east Sunday bringing a good chance of rain and storms to the state.  This is good news as the major drought remains across the state.  There may be a chance for some strong to severe storms but we're too early in the forecast cycle for this system to pin point specific severe weather threats across the southern plains.  The timing of the system may also change, but is currently suggesting our higher chance for thunderstorm activity will occur Sunday late morning into the early afternoon.  The system will more than likely slow down Sunday evening as the upper air flow becomes parallel to the surface boundary Sunday afternoon.  This may allow the rain-storm activity to linger Sunday evening across far eastern OK before moving into Arkansas and points east early Monday. 

Temperatures will begin to warm after todays and Wednesdays mid-60s.  We'll see highs in the mid to upper 70s Thursday and Friday, with some lower 80s a possibility west of Tulsa. South winds in the 15 to 30 mph range will be likely by the end of the week as the pressure gradient begins to increase as the upper level system approaches the inter-mountain region.  Despite an increase in low level moisture, the fire danger will be elevated Thursday and Friday.  

Temps will drop Sunday from the lower 60s during the morning into the lower 50s by Sunday afternoon and evening.  

Cool air will reside for a few days early next week across the state before another modest warming trend occurs.  

Our high yesterday was 65 recorded at 11:27am.

The normal average high is 66 with a low of 44.

Daily records include a high of 87 from 1945 and a low of 20 from 1959.
