Misdemeanor Charge Filed Against Chelsea Man In Rogers County Dog Death

The Rogers County District Attorney filed criminal charges Monday in the case of a black Labrador named "Jetta," whose death sparked much public interest and a $10,000 reward offer for information.

Early police reports suggested the dog was tied to a car and dragged to death, which incited outrage amongst animal lovers all over Green Country.

Investigation by the Rogers County Sheriff's Office later found there was never any evidence that the dog had been dragged while she was alive.

A Chelsea man eventually came forward and said he found the dog injured on his property and shot her to put her out of her misery. He said he later dragged the dog's carcass off of his property, when it started to smell.

Rogers County DA Janice Steidley filed a misdemeanor charge against that man—improper disposal of a carcass, which carries a fine of up to $500.

"We appreciate the public's concern and passion because we take allegations of animal cruelty very seriously," said Steidley. "We are filing the charges that are backed by the investigation. Now we ask the public to let the legal system work."

The DA's Office said they and the RCSO received a multitude of messages during the investigation into the dog's death, including threats by phone, email, fax, and social media.
