Most of us saw the scary scenes unfold down south Tuesday as twisters tore through a major metropolitan area. There's no doubt about it, we've entered the infamous Severe Weather Season and Oklahomans were fortunate to be spared this particular blow. Instability was lacking and the ingredients for those tornadoes came together over a narrow corridor in north Texas, causing all of the damage in that area. The system did, however, bring some nice rainfall to the southern half of Oklahoma (see the map above).
That same system responsible for the rash of tornadoes is still bringing us some unsettled weather. A few pop-up showers and thunderstorms are possible through Thursday morning as the meandering upper-level low pressure pushes east of here. Nothing all that severe is expected with hail being the predominant concern of any storms that do form.
In the wake of this low pressure, expect some actual cool air! Those readings won't stray far from seasonable averages, but it's been a while since we've encountered anything "normal" here! The outlook is not all that bad through the end of the week with high pressure in control. Abundant sunshine returns Good Friday giving us a boost in afternoon temperatures.
What about Easter weekend? I can't say it'll be perfect streak of weather for all of us. A weakening cold front will drift south on Saturday, which may set off some afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. Widespread severe weather is not expected since most of the upper-level energy/higher winds will be displaced to the north. However, it could dampen a few outdoor Easter egg hunts if rain moves in before sunset on Saturday. The weak front will push south and likely fizzle near the Red River on Easter Sunday. While we can't entirely rule out a few raindrops on Easter, I think we can expect a nice day with some sunshine and mild temperatures. Hopefully we won't have any soggy Easter bunnies on our hands!
Much of next week should be near or even cooler than average. We might see a round of severe thunderstorms later in the week, but nothing appears all that ominous as of now. If we make it through the first half of April with no significant severe weather on our hands, it will definitely be a blessing… And at this rate, April could end up being a cooler month than March! We will see.
