OKLAHOMA CITY – The Red Oak Eagles used two big runs to build an insurmountable lead on the way to a 57-43 win over the Burlington Elks in the Class B quarterfinals Thursday.
The teams began the game relatively even, with Red Oak leading 13-11 after the first quarter. But the Eagles took over in the second quarter.
Red Oak began raining 3-pointers, hitting four shots from beyond the arc to kick start a 16-2 run and take a 29-14 lead. During that run, Red Oak’s Dwight Camp jumped over two defenders for a thunderous dunk and followed it with a 3-pointer on the next possession.
Burlington managed to go on a small run that extended from the end of the second quarter into the third and cut the lead down to nine points.
Red Oak responded with another run, again thanks to the long ball. Brooks Deatherage hit back-to-back 3-pointers and the Eagles went on a 10-0 run to go up 44-25. The game was not close again after that.
Burlington went on another small run in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter to make the final score seem closer. But with one minute left, both teams conceded the outcome and mass substituted with their bench players.
The victory will advance the Eagles into the state semifinals, where they will face the winner between Duke and Graham (Weleetka) at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the state fairgrounds.
