HENRYETTA, Oklahoma -- The town of Henryetta continues to mourn the loss of seventh grader Landon Jewell, who died after being shot last week.
When a community is suffering from a shock or tragedy, sports can provide a welcome outlet, even if it’s only temporary relief.
The first home basketball games since his passing were a pair of tough-played Homecoming contests, the Knights lost to Haskell 55-49 in the final minute, and the Lady Knights effortlessly crushed the Lady Haymakers 69-40 Friday night.
The boys game was a very high speed one, a referee commented that the pace was around 90 miles per hour. The Knights had a 13-11 lead after one quarter. Haskell began the second quarter on a 6-0 run, but Henryetta reeled off 10 in a row, and led narrowly 29-26 at halftime. Haskell scored the first 7 points after the break, Henryetta battled back to lead 40-39 with one quarter to play.
With 1:26 left, the score was tied at 49-all, Haskell made free throws to finish out a close 55-49 game. Junior Joe Moudy led the Knights with 11 points, sophomore Damon Mouss nine, senior Greg Thomas eight, sophomore Blake Johnson had seven.
