TULSA, Oklahoma – With the district championship on the line, the Booker T. Washington Hornets stuck with what had worked all season long – stingy defense. Booker T. stomped McAlester 49-18 Friday night at S.E. Williams Stadium, putting to rest any rumors that the Hornets were overrated.

The Hornets held the Buffaloes to their lowest point total of the season. McAlester came in undefeated in district play averaging over 43 points per game in those league matchups. Booker T. limited what the Buffaloes were able to do on offense and forced timely turnovers.

The Hornets jumped out to a 21-6 lead in the first half. Tyler Lockett hauled in a 12-yard catch from Dominique Sells to take a 28-12 lead at halftime.

Tre Stearns scored two second half touchdowns for the Hornets. He scored on consecutive plays sandwiched around a Williams Whayne fumble recovery.

The lone highlight of the night for McAlester came in the first half. Trailing 21-6, Dakota Mize hauled in a 68-yard touchdown to draw to within nine points. The Buffs would get no closer.

Booker T. emerged as not only the top team in 5A District 3, but the team to beat for the gold ball. The Hornets only allowed 34 points in their final seven games. They will host the Claremore Zebras in round one of the playoffs.

Last season Booker T. was unable to defend its 2008 gold ball because the OSSAA forced them to forfeit games late in the season because of eligibility issues. Many of the players said that they felt slighted after those sanctions were handed out. They’re eager to make up for lost time.

The loss dropped McAlester to 9-1 this season. The earned the second seed in 5A-District 3. That means they will face the Grove Ridgerunners in round one.
