The Golden Hurricane seems pretty much set at quarterback this season. G.J. Kinne is the reigning Offensive Player of the Year in C-USA, so the backups are irrelevant, right?
No.
In fact, the backup quarterback position at TU is very jumbled all of the sudden. Earlier this week, rumors had incoming junior Shavodrick Beaver leaving the school. He told me FACE-TO-FACE that he wasn't leaving. For now, I'll take him at his word…
How about highly touted freshman Kalen Henderson? He's unavailable after getting suspended during spring workouts. He was impressive early in spring drills. Will he be reinstated if Beaver can't play?
Other than those guys, you're left with Stephen Rouse from Cascia Hall and a handful of other unproven guys and incoming freshmen. Is Tulsa prepared to compete with Rouse as the backup signal caller?
The good news is, after Kinne is gone it looks like the future could be in good hands. Nebraska QB Cody Green is apparently considering Tulsa and Baylor as possible landing spots for him to transfer to. He's a strong guy and probably a better option at QB for the Golden Hurricane going forward … if he makes it to campus.
Kinne is clearly the star in town. Don't think for a minute that the coaching staff isn't dreading having to send someone else out on that field besides No. 4 this fall.
