ORU Splits Second Doubleheader with North Dakota State

The Golden Eagles dropped a close contest in the early game, but won in convincing fashion in the nightcap.

FARGO, North Dakota -- The Oral Roberts Golden Eagles split the second doubleheader of the weekend with North Dakota State Friday, falling 5-3 in the early game and dropping the Bison 11-4 in the closing game.

In the early game, the Bison (11-20, 8-4) took an early lead when a fielding error on a Nick Colwell bunt single allowed Tyler Sheen to score to take a 1-0 lead. However, a Chris Elder solo home run evenedthe score in the top of the fourth.

In the home half of the fourth, Zach Wentz knocked an RBI double to retake the lead. Nic Obey knocked a one-out sac fly in the next inning to take a two-run lead, which they held until the end of the game.

The second game was dominated by the Golden Eagles’ (19-16, 8-4) pitching.

After giving up three runs in the bottom of the second, Alex Gonzalez (4-5) kept the North Dakota State bats silent, pitching the three scoreless innings to close his outing. The freshman right-handed pitcher finished after five complete innings of service, giving up just five hits and three earned runs.

Wentz (1-5) was credited with the loss Sunday, giving up seven hits and five earned runs in his four innings of service for North Dakota State.

Oral Roberts takes five days off before opening up a four-game conference series against IFPW at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
