LAWRENCE, Kan. – Pitching ruled the day for the Tulsa softball team Wednesday in a doubleheader sweep of Kansas.

The Golden Hurricane won its two games by a combined score of 7-2, starting with a 3-0 shutout in Game 1.

Lacey Middlebrooks and Jordan Kinard combined for the shutout and held Kansas to just five hits. The Hurricane first got on the board thanks to an error in the second inning, but added two insurance runs in the sixth thanks to a two-run single by Kelly Chapman.

Middlebrooks pitched through four innings and held Kansas to just three hits, and Kinard was credited with a save after closing out the final three innings only allowing two hits.

The offense got off to a slow start in the second game of the day, with Kansas starter Alex Jones holding the Hurricane hitless through the first three innings. But TU broke out of that funk in the next two frames.

Starting pitcher Aimee Creger drove home the game’s first run with an RBI double in the fourth, and then scored on a single by Lacey Middlebrooks in the next at-bat for a 2-0 lead. The Hurricane added two more runs in the fifth inning on an RBI double by Samantha Cobb and another RBI from Creger.

The Jayhawks got on the board in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a two-run home run by Liz Kocon, but Kansas managed to record only one hit for the rest of the game.

Creger earned a win after pitching a complete game and holding Kansas to two runs on six hits, and she struck out 12 batters. Jones was pulled after 3.1 innings; she gave up the first two runs and was credited with a loss.

The Hurricane will return home for its next action, another doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. Friday against UAB.
