LAWRENCE, Kansas – The OU baseball team completed a strong end to the regular season by scoring seven runs in the final three innings and defeating Kansas 9-6 Sunday to earn the No. 2 seed in the Big 12.
The Sooners (42-14, 15-10) finished the season on a seven-game winning streak, passing Kansas State for the second spot in the conference in the process. And for the second game in a row, Tyler Ogle was the hero Sunday.
The teams entered the ninth inning tied 6-6, when Ogle blasted a three-run home run to give OU a lead it did not give back. The day before, Ogle delivered a two-run double in the ninth that also drove home the winning run.
Ogle’s homer came after the Sooners put up four runs in the seventh thanks in large part to another long bomb by Cameron Seitzer. OU entered the frame trailing 5-2 and had not scored since the second inning, but that changed when Garrett Buechele connected on an RBI double. Seitzer followed with a three-run home run in the next at-bat to put the Sooners up 6-5.
The Jayhawks (31-24-1, 11-15-1) responded in the bottom of the inning, when Brett Lisher tied things up with an RBI single. The score remained tied until the ninth, setting up Ogle’s heroics.
After Ogle gave OU the lead, Jeremy Erben earned his third save of the season by making quick work of the Jayhawks in the bottom of the ninth. Anthony Collazo (1-0) only faced two batters, but still came away with a win. Travis Blankenship (1-5) finished with the loss after giving up three runs in 2.2 innings.
The result of Sunday’s game locked OU into the No. 2 spot in the Big 12, while Kansas finished at No. 7, ensuring the two teams will face each other again in the first round of the conference tournament. They will play at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
