Getting Oklahoma Unstuck From The Blizzard Of 2011

TULSA, Oklahoma -- Wednesday is "moving day" across northeastern Oklahoma, moving all of the stuck vehicles out of the way to make room for snow plows. 

The blizzard has moved on, but it leaves behind the coldest temperatures of the year.

A city of Tulsa dump truck got stuck in the downtown area early Wednesday.  A second dump truck dispatched to help also got stuck.  Finally, officials sent a front-end loader and it was able to pull both dump trucks out. 

National Guard troops were called out Tuesday to help rescue crews search for people stranded along Oklahoma's Turner and Will Rogers Turnpikes as the blizzard paralyzed the state's two major cities.

Oklahoma turnpike update:

• Will Rogers westbound from Missouri to Tulsa.
• Turner Turnpike westbound from Tulsa to Stroud.
• Northern end of Muskogee Turnpike.

More than 20 inches of snow, sleet and ice have been dumped on the state.   

The National Weather Service in Tulsa indicated Tuesday afternoon that there could be "several hundred people" stranded in cars across northeastern Oklahoma. 

Oklahoma Department of Transportation spokeswoman Kenna Mitchell said crews tried to keep at least one lane open on major roadways. But Mitchell says snowplows were thwarted by blowing snow that accumulated several inches an hour and devoured parts of interstate in minutes.   

Both of Oklahoma's major airports in Tulsa and Oklahoma City were closed on Tuesday.  

ODOT says to check road conditions before heading out Wednesday.  In Oklahoma call the Department of Public Safety's road condition hotline at 1-888-425-2385.
