OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City police and Douglass High School administrators are investigating how a loaded gun ended up on campus.
Thursday afternoon, Douglass High School officials were notified by a student and staff member that a student may be in possession of a weapon. Oklahoma City police were called and two students were taken into custody for questioning.
Douglass High School Principal Brian Staples said a loaded hand gun was found on campus. Staples said students are scanned by metal detectors and back packs are checked when they enter the building at two different entrances, but there was clearly a security breach.
Parents have been notified of the incident.
Staples said this was the first time since he became principal two years ago that a loaded weapon was found on campus.
Although the students in question are in police custody and the event is isolated, extra security measures will be in effect, administrators said. Police have not released any information about the students' possible involvement in the incident.
When asked about the second student taken into custody, Staples said he didn't know what role that student played into this but it was part of the police investigation.
Douglass High School is on heightened awareness and additional police will be visible on campus all day Friday.
The Oklahoma City Public School District does not tolerate guns or any other weapons on any OKCPS campus and administrators will work with police to prosecute any student or person who violates this district policy.
