TULSA---This time of year when he isn't fishing you may find Jimmy Sherman at Howard Park in west Tulsa.  Jimmy and others gather pecans in the city park under the massive pecan trees.

‘There's a lot of people come out here and pick up pecans,' said Jimmy, ‘especially the older people.'

Jimmy uses the pecans in his wife's banana bread, as a topping on pumpkin pie or just for cracking and eating, and has been collecting the nuts for years.

‘I was raised up here in west Tulsa,' he said, ‘I've been here since 1940, maybe every two years they have a good crop. If you put them in the freezer after you crack them and everything they'll last for two or three years.'

While Jimmy hates to leave a nut on the ground, he denies that it's a ‘free meal' and closely guards his collection methods.

‘There's probably two nuts out here, one picking them up and one on the trees,' he laughed.
