TULSA, OK -- Diane Perkins is an organic gardener who wants to keep her property as pollutant-free as possible.

"Awareness of the environment is heightening with me, so I wanted to do my part," Perkins said.  "I thought I needed all the help I could get, and I knew she was tuned-in the minute that I talked to her on the phone."

Diane called Terri Higgs with Reel Mowing, a company with a different take on lawn maintenance; it shuns the use of gasoline-powered equipment.  Higgsi had the idea for a business a year ago when her father bought her a reel mower and she found it didn't affect her allergies.

"I call it earth-friendly lawn care," said Higgs.  "There are earth-friendly lawn care businesses all over the country, I couldn't find any others in Oklahoma so I thought well, someone should be doing this, why not me?"

Higgs calls it girl-powered lawn maintenance, and although she insists it is easy to push the non-motorized mower, she also admits it does take some energy.

"I eat a lot more now because it does take a lot of energy, I no longer go to the gym to work out with weights," she said.  "It's not just about oil, no oil, it's kind of a quality of life issue for me.  It's just a little nicer, I wouldn't want to come mow this lawn in this beautiful garden if I couldn't hear the birds sing."

The phone number for Reel Mowing is 918-691-5691.
