Investigating A Broken Arrow Murder-Suicide

BROKEN ARROW, OK -- Police continue to investigate what they are calling a "murder-suicide."

The incident happened Friday night in the 1000 block of West Queens Street.

Police say a 64-year-old Jim Duncan shot and killed his stepson, before turning the gun on himself. Neighbors say even though the stepdad and son didn't get along, they can't believe what they saw.

Barbara Ketring was about to doze off with her husband when she heard gunshots ring out next door.

"We got in bed, watching TV, and then all of a sudden it was bam-bam-bam-bam, and then just a split second, and then a fifth shot," said Barbara Ketring.

Police say Duncan shot and killed his 33-year-old stepson, Adam Mills. Ketring say police told them that Duncan left his wife at a nearby Wal-Mart to drive back home and confront his stepson.

"I just couldn't believe that it was happening outside our yard. It was devastating, it was really upsetting," said neighbor Jennifer Myers.

When Broken Arrow Police arrived at the house, they found Duncan in the backyard still holding the gun. Jennifer Myers watched from her front porch.

"I see 'em go around to the backside of the house, and that's when I heard the man screaming, shouting. I believe I heard him say if you come around the corner I'm going to shoot myself, and then a few seconds later, I heard a gunshot," said Jennifer Myers.

Randy Ketring says he's invited the stepdad over for drinks in the past.

"He was a good neighbor, he was a super-nice guy," said Randy Ketring.

Tulsa County court documents show that Duncan filed a protective order against Mills in April 2007, but the order was vacated two months later. But it's clear that the two continued to fight.

Ketring says police officers were called to the house six months ago because of an altercation between Duncan and Mills.

On what should have been a peaceful holiday weekend, Randy Ketring says he didn't sleep a wink.

"I was sitting up wondering, I mean, I know they didn't get along and all, but you just don't have any idea. You just don't think people are capable of that living right next door to you," said Randy Ketring.

Broken Arrow Police tell the News On 6, they are still not sure what the two were fighting about before the shooting.
