OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ An Oklahoma City police officer is on routine paid administrative leave after shooting and killing a suspect who had fired at her. Thirty-three-year-old Brian J. Smith died at a hospital after the shooting late Friday.

Oklahoma City police say Sergeant Kelly Roush, a 7-year veteran of the department, reportedly tried to pull over a vehicle driven by Smith in southwest Oklahoma City.

Police say when Sergeant Kelly Roush got behind the vehicle, Smith took evasive action and the vehicle ended up in the front yard of a residence.

Police say Smith jumped out of the vehicle and fled from the officer between houses and over a fence. As Sergeant Kelly Roush gave chase, police say Smith fired multiple shots at her, and she returned fire, striking Smith.

Police spokesman Sergeant Paco Balderrama says police found Smith's gun and that they learned the vehicle Smith was driving had been stolen.
