MONTGOMERY, W.Va. (AP) _ West Virginia University Tech football coach Shane Beatty has resigned, citing personal reasons, less than a week after the Golden Bears lost at Western Kentucky 87-0.

Beatty, a native of British Columbia, plans to return to Canada, Athletic Director Lou Talerico said Friday.

Defensive line coach Bill Kehrer was named interim coach.

Beatty was in his second season as head coach. The Golden Bears finished 1-10 last year to end a 24-game losing streak.

Western Kentucky's 49 first-quarter points on Sept. 8 tied a record for the most points in a quarter by a Bowl Subdivision team. It also was the most points in a game in Western Kentucky history.

Tech was 0-2 heading into Saturday night's game at Morehead State.

``This is just a bump in the road,'' said Talerico. ``The kids are still positive, and they're still focused.'' Kehrer
