SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- The California Supreme Court has ruled shopping malls can't stop protesters from urging the boycott of stores while on mall property.
The decision stems from a case involving a 1998 protest against a department store at a San Diego mall.
Members of a newspaper workers' union were thrown out for distributing literature calling for a boycott of the store. The union wanted to hurt the store's business because it advertised in the newspaper.
The high court has ruled the demonstrations are protected under California's free speech laws.
