OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ The National Eye Institute is awarding nearly three (m) million dollars in grant money to a pair of Oklahoma institutions.

The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and the Dean -A- McGee Eye Institute will use the money to research eye diseases and conditions.

Eye institute researchers will address inherited eye diseases, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, glaucoma, medications for retina disease and gene therapy.

About 70-thousand Oklahomans suffer from diabetic retinopathy -- the most common cause of severe vision loss in Americans under age 60.

Macular degeneration is the most common cause of severe vision loss in Americans over age 60. It affects an estimated 21-thousand Oklahomans.
