COMMERCE - Planners have purchased land and will begin raising funds to build a museum honoring New York Yankees Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle in his hometown.
Brian Waybright, chairman of the Mickey Mantle Memorial Trust, said the trust purchased about 20 acres along U.S. Highway 69, across the street from Mickey Mantle Field.
Within a month, Waybright said, the group will begin raising the $6 million to $10 million needed to build the Mickey Mantle Museum.
Mantle, who was born in Spavinaw and grew up in Commerce, played centerfield for the Yankees from 1951 to 1968. He died in August 1995.
