(Oklahoma City-AP) -- A handful of Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers have violated a state law that bans troopers from making political contributions.

The Daily Oklahoman has reported that at least seven troopers are listed on campaign contribution reports over the last eight years.

Some troopers say the contributions probably were given by their spouses.

Others say the law is unconstitutional.

Under state law, a trooper may not take part in or contribute to a political campaign. A trooper can only vote.

It is legal for a trooper's spouse to make a political contribution.

A violation of this law is a misdemeanor offense.

Public Safety Commissioner Bob Ricks says troopers should maintain the appearance of being impartial and he will enforce the rule.

The donations were discovered by the newspaper during a computer- assisted review of hundreds of campaign reports filed since 1995.
