Television crews in Phoenix, Arizona rolled tape as the story unfolded early this morning. A man stole a dump truck and took off down the busy streets with police behind him.
But in a twisted turn of events - the driver crashed at an intersection.
The dump truck rolled on its side, clipped a traffic light pole and slid to a stop.

The driver got out and tried to run, but a witness stopped his van, and chased him down with a baseball bat.

Doug Glick, Witness to Crash: "Low and behold he jumps out and pulled a pair of bolt cutters out. And then I told him to lay down on the ground, he was being real crazy looking, and acted like he was going to run off, so I was going to try and corner him in one of the areas, because I knew within minutes there was going to be a hundred cops all over him."

Police officers soon after arrived and took the dump truck thief into custody. The truck hit at least one other car during the chase. The truck driver and two adults and four children in the second car hit were taken to an area hospital, though it is believed their injuries are not serious.
