Nebraska women, Colorado men lead after first day at Big 12 track

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) _ Amanda Moreley came to Nebraska to run hurdles. She found success Friday in the weight throw.

Moreley's toss of 60'5 3/4'' won the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships weight throw and helped pace the defending champion Cornhusker women to a first day lead in the two-day event. Most of the finals will be held on Saturday.

Nebraska's women garnered 44 points, Kansas State was second with 39 and Colorado third with 23.

On the men's side of the meet, Kansas' Russell Scott set a Big 12 and Bob Devaney Sports Center record in the weight throw at 77 feet 10 3/4 inches. Scott's toss pulled the Jayhawks into a four-way tie for third in the men's meet.

The Colorado men leads after the first day of competition with 26 points, Missouri had 23 and Kansas, Kansas State, Texas and defending champion Nebraska were tied for third with 15 points each.

Other individual winners on Friday were: Oklahoma's Leslie Dunlap, who cleared 13'3 3/4'' in the pole vault, setting a new Big 12 record; Monique Peters of Kansas, who won the long jump with a leap of 19' 10 3/4'' and Jason Ward of Texas, who took the men's long jump at 25'4 3/4''.

Texas A&M's won the men's distance medley relay in a time of 9:49.59. Texas Tech's women won the distance medley relay with a time of 11:34.15.
