(Muskogee-AP) -- A man accused of shooting his wife who was suffering from cancer has been charged with first-degree murder.

Houston Joice was ordered to held without bond and undergo a competency evaluation by a judge in Muskogee County.

Joice was arrested Sunday after he allegedly shot his wife Jenny Mayhew in the back of the head while she slept.

Joice told deputies that he killed his wife because she was very ill and wanted to die.

Joice will return to court January 14th.
