(Cushing-AP) -- Authorities say a guard at a private prison in Cushing was unloading his weapon in a parking lot when it went off and shot an inmate sitting in a police car.

Convicted robber Art Reese was shot last night while sitting in a car outside the Corrections Corporation of America jail in Cushing.

Authorities say C-C-A guard Owen Patterson had to unload his weapon before escorting Reese into the prison.

Reese was coming back to the prison from a hospital trip for a sports-related injury. Officials say he was rushed back to the hospital after the shooting.

He was released with the bullet still in his shoulder.

The state doesn't plan to send its own investigator to the site.
