OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ Most Oklahomans aren't into making New Year's resolutions and only a fraction of those who make such vows actually follow through on them, a poll found.
The Oklahoman/OU Poll found 57 percent of Oklahomans never make New Year's resolutions. Meanwhile, only 27 percent of those who make resolutions said they always or nearly always keep them.
Of the 400 people polled, 28 percent said they sometimes do make resolutions, while 15 percent said they always do.
Sarah Layton does. The Bethany woman, 23, said her past resolutions have helped put her life on track.
``I was in college and had a string of bad relationships,'' Layton said. ``I made a resolution not to date for an entire year. I kept it and my grades went up tremendously.''
Last year, Layton graduated from Southern Nazarene University and got a full-time advertising job. She also met her future husband. The couple recently bought their first house.
``This year, I'm resolving to lower my debts,'' she said.
Those polled had differing views on personal and national economic conditions.
Sixty percent responded they thought 2001 would be a year of personal economic prosperity, but only 49 percent of those surveyed said they think 2001 will be a year of economic prosperity for the United States. That's slightly more than the 43 percent who said the country will suffer economically.
Among the top resolutions planned for 2001 are becoming a better person or a better family member.
Running a close third is the resolution to lose weight, although only 18 percent say they will make actual exercise a priority this year. Only 4 percent plan to join a health club.
