EVERGREEN PARK, Ill. (AP) — A high school was closed Tuesday and a student taken into custody after officials found a gasoline-filled bottle intended to explode inside a locker.
The freshman at Evergreen Park Community High School in suburban Chicago told police there were three more such devices in the building, said Deputy Police Chief John Watson.
The boy, whose name and age were not disclosed, was being evaluated by psychiatrists and police, Watson said. A bomb squad was searching the building, which will remain closed until Thursday morning.
There were no injuries and the only damage was to the locker. It was unclear whose locker it was.
School officials noticed smoke coming from the locker and found a small plastic bottle filled with gasoline inside, Watson said. A fuse on the bottle had been lit, but it failed to set off the explosion because of a lack of oxygen, he said.
Evergreen Park High School is the alma mater of Unabomber Ted Kaczynski, who sent mail bombs that killed three people before his arrest in 1996.
