(Oklahoma City-AP) -- A group of urban Democrats called for car tag cuts of up to 50 (m) million dollars and elimination of loopholes that allow fraud and cheating.
The Democrats from Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Norman and Enid outlined goals in a letter delivered to House Speaker Loyd Benson yesterday.
One of the goals stated in the Democrats' letter is that any tag reform measure reduce state revenue by at least 25 (m) million dollars, but no more than 50 (m) million.
The letter says the average Oklahoman should pay no more for their car tags than Oklahoma businesses pay for commercial vehicles, which is 95 dollars.
Lawton state Representative Ron Kirby, who has a car tag reform bill pending in the Senate, didn't sign the letter. His measure would reduce revenues by 11 (m) million dollars.
A Republican proposal that would've reduced revenues by 138 (m) million dollars died in a Senate committee.
One of the goals in the letter is to eliminate the commercial tag category or close loopholes.
