A Vinita teen-ager was killed when the car he was a passenger in ran off the side of a Mayes County road. The latest death brought the Labor Day holiday weekend fatality total to at least eight.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said Albert F. Goforth Jr., 16, was partially ejected from the pickup truck in Monday's crash. The driver was not injured.
The truck went off the road near Langley, struck a tree and rolled over, troopers said. People at the scene lifted the vehicle to get Goforth out, the patrol said.
Troopers said only the driver was wearing a seat belt.
The eight deaths on state roads compared with seven for the same period last year.
"It was a pretty safe weekend," patrol Lt. Stewart Meyer said. No drownings or boating accidents were reported.
